James R. Metcalf, DMD, MDS
Dr. Metcalf graduated from the State University of New York, College at Oswego in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology.
He then went on for graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine and earned his D.M.D. degree in 1976. While there he was recognized by Dean Edward J. Forest with a Letter of Commendation on April 8, 1974. He was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the National Dental Honor Society, April 6, 1976, and at graduation he was awarded the American Association of Orthodontists Award.
Following graduation from dental school, he completed a one-year General Practice Residency at Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY.
Upon completion of his General Practice Residency, Dr. Metcalf returned to the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a three-year graduate program in Orthodontics. During his Residency in Orthodontics, he received extensive training in various orthodontic techniques, including orthopedic appliances, surgical treatment of severe cases and early interceptive treatment. He also taught orthodontics on both the graduate and undergraduate level at the University of Pittsburgh. He was responsible for coordinating, scheduling and overseeing all graduate orthodontic continuing education courses. He also did a review of the literature and appropriate research and analysis of data for a Master’s Thesis entitled, A Study to Compare and Standardize Differences in Treatment Times Between Two Different Edgewise Techniques When Treating Dental Class II Division I Malocclusions. For this, Dr. Metcalf received not only a Certificate in Orthodontics, but also a Master of Dental Science degree.
Dr. Metcalf has been in private practice with Orthodontic Associates for the past 23 years, where he has enjoyed treating patients from the Greater Lowell, Chelmsford and Nashua areas.
Dr. Metcalf is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the North East Society of Orthodontists, Massachusetts Society of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Massachusetts Dental Society and Greater Lowell Dental Society, of which he is a Past President. Dr. Metcalf is also a member of the Chelmsford Rotary Club and was recently named a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International which recognizes significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world.
January, 2008, Dr. Metcalf proudly accepted the only New Hampshire invitation by 3M Unitek to partner with them in their worldwide research and development of their Lava COS Intraoral 3D Scanner. This includes being part of 3M's clinical digital “impressionless” studies of real time digital study models with bite registrations and the construction of orthodontic appliances. Dr. Metcalf is one of three orthodontists worldwide to pioneer this digital orthodontic research study. It is a great honor for him and his staff to play such a vital role in the advancement of digital orthodontics.
